From picker to plant supervisor. Dominik’s story is one of dedication, growth, and long-term commitment. After arriving in the UK in 2005, he began his journey at Crayford as a picker — and over the years, worked his way up to become Plant Supervisor, leading a team of 45 people each day.
In this blog we share Dominik’s perspective on building a career from the ground up, what it means to feel at home at work, and how N+P has evolved alongside his journey.
Q: How did your career start at N+P?
“My name is Dominik Szjena and I work in Crayford as the Plant Supervisor and I have been working here for 20 years. I started as a 'Picker' and 5-6 years later I was a Bailer Operator and after that I became the Plant Supervisor.”
Q: What do you like about N+P in Crayford?
"My wife and I came to the UK in 2005. The plan was to stay for 2 years, but 2 years become 2 more and 2 more and 2 more and now it has been 20 years. However, I feel good here and I know the plant completely, from A to Z. The place has also changed a lot, 20 years ago it was completely different. N+P made the Health & Safety much better. I like coming to the plant, it is like my second home. I feel good here and when I wake up I am happy to go to work."
Q: What does your typical day look like?
"My daily work starts at 7 o'clock. I start the day with a conversation with the night shift supervisor about what happened the night before and then he hands me the shift. After that I check the mahcinery before starting the lines. Then we get to work. I have 45 people on the floor everyday, I have to control them and adjust the machines based on what is coming on. I also have to check the quality and inform the quality manager."
"If there aren't a lot of problems to solve in a day, I consider it a good day."
Q: What are your hopes or ambitions for the future of N+P — and your role within it?
"Maybe in the future N+P can open the same kind of plant in my country and I can go back there."
Q: What does working at N+P mean to you personally?
"This is my first job ever since I came to the UK in 2005 and probably it will also be my last job within the UK."
