From driving only forklifts to operating nearly all machines at the Teesside site, Steven’s journey at N+P is one of growth, new opportunities, and personal development. In less than three years, he has expanded his skills, enriched his personal life, and found a team spirit that makes even the early mornings start with a smile.
In this blog, he shares his perspective on how working at N+P has shaped his career and future and why teamwork is essential for working in operations.
Q: Can you introduce yourself and share your role at N+P?
"I work at N+P Teesside and I’ve been here for three years in August. I’m a Level 2 Operator. Before this, I worked in a cargo factory driving forklifts. Since joining here, I’ve been able to learn a lot more — I can drive forklifts, shovel loaders, telehandlers, and I’m willing to learn whatever I can."
Q: What motivates you in your work?
"My personal drive is my family. Even though I have to get up early two days a week, it’s knowing that I can do a lot more for my wife and kids. I can take them more places, take them abroad, do more things with them. I’ve got holidays booked I’ve never had before, and I’ve learned to drive and get my drving licence. It keeps me happy."
Q: How would you describe the atmosphere at Teesside?
"The atmosphere is good. It’s always a good laugh and it helps the day go better. There are always jokes and stuff, and I get along with everyone. We all look ruined when we get up early to come in, but by the end of the day we’re all joking and laughing."
"To be honest, I’m quite happy with what I’m doing. There might be chances later on to move further up, but right now I’m happy with where I am."
Q: What do you produce on site, and why is it important?
"We’re making a substitute for coal — an ecological friendlier version. We reuse waste by processing it into pellets for everything that normally runs on coal. It's a good substitute for coal and better for the environment.
Q: What are you most proud of?
"The amount I’ve learned. Hopefully I’ll get my licence for the 360 grab, and then I can pretty much drive every machine in here. There’s only one left to go."
